Removing rust from hardware, tools, fixtures and other metal surfaces is often an impossible task. by the years, I’ve tried several commercial rust removers, which use caustic chemicals to cut through the corrosion, but none worked very well. Plus, they’re messy and expensive.
I’ve had some success with a wire brush and belt sander, but those tools can’t always be used considering of an object’s finish, size or shape.
Anyway, just as I was about to give up, I read about a product that has been effectively removing rust for by a century. And that product is (drum roll please): molasses.
That’s right, the super-sweet, syrupy liquid used in baking is a potent rust remover. I wouldn’t have believe it whether I hadn’t tried it for myself.
